Paulette Marie Sauvé is a painter and tapestry weaver.
Over the past
thirty years her style of painting
has consistently
reflected her work in tapestry.
“My recent work
explores the patina and rustic quality of antiques.
Abstract works and
landscapes inspired by ancient and historical structures as well as
rugged marshes and rivers comprise my main themes.
My work is
created in oil and mixed media on canvas.
I also weave
tapestry using the Les Gobelins technique, and I apply ancient dye
recipes to the yarns.
Woven fabric
imbedded in the background of my paintings recalls my work in tapestry.
Travels in Europe
and the Mid-East have inspired a contemplation of aspects of archaeology
and mysticism in my work.
I paint an elusive
image in a sort of narrative, that invokes antiquity, memory and passage
of time.
The impression of
weathered stone, and fragments of glorious monuments give an element of
mythology.
I deconstruct the
architecture as if artefacts are emerging from the deep.”

BIOGRAPHY:
Paulette Marie
Sauvé is a painter, tapestry weaver and writer.
She studied visual
arts at the Institut des Arts Appliqués
in Montreal, Quebec.
Later, she was awarded a government grant to travel to France where she
discovered
natural
pigments, ancient dyes, and tapestry, notably at
the Manufacture des Gobelins.
This
inspired her to write about the art of creating with natural
materials.
She obtained her
Master of Fine Arts degree in 1992, at the
Université du Quebec.
The MFA
course included studies in northern Italy.
In 1978,
1979 and 1984 her work was shown at the Museum of
Contemporary Art of Montreal.
She is
represented by several galleries since 1978, and has had exhibitions in several countries.
Paulette Marie Sauvé has
given lectures, seminars and workshops in the USA,
Burkina Faso, Canada and
Israel.
She creates commissioned
paintings, and her work is shown in galleries, museums,
private and corporate
collections in several countries. She has
obtained grants and
awards, notably in 2002,
she received Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 50th Golden
Jubilee Medal awarded by
The Governor General of Canada. She also received grants
from the Canada Arts
Council, and is a four time recipient of the
Quebec Minister of Cultural
Affairs Grants.
TEACHING & CULTURAL ACTIVITIES:
From 1992 to 2002, she taught visual arts and organized exhibitions and
cultural events.
She then returned to her studio to work full time at tapestry, painting
and creating illustrated books.
Paulette has published two books in French: "La Teinture Naturelle",
and, "Le Filage", as well as two CD-ROMs about the history of textile
art in New England and New France. She is a trained volunteer tutor for
English Literacy, and a member of the South Shore Reading Council.
Born in North Bay, Ontario, Paulette has given lectures, seminars and
workshops in the USA, Burkina Faso, Canada and Israel. She
creates commissioned paintings, and her work is shown in galleries,
museums, private and corporate collections in several countries.
