Description

Fiber Optics in Vibration

“Fiber Optics in Vibration” is a work-installation project renewing the conceptual language of artist Paulette-Marie Sauvé in a vision of digital artistic expression inspired by her series of mixed media artworks created with microelectronic components.

As part of this project, the artist will work on several stages in preparation for creating a series of seven panels on the TC2 Jacquard weaving loom, using electronic optical fibers incorporating micro controllers and LED lights to produce kinetic effects. The patterns woven into the panels are drawings created by the artist, which she then transforms in “Adobe Elements” software to reduce each drawing to 2 colors – black and white, which become a file in binary code. Each drawing is then saved in a BMP format file (.bmp). This file is sent to the TC2 Jacquard loom software, (see photo #5 showing this file on its computer-laptop). The seven woven panels will measure 71 cm wide by 158 cm high by 12 cm deep. These panels will be individually framed to assemble the electronic circuit behind each tapestry, linking the optical fibers animated by electronic micro controllers that the artist has programmed with the “Python” application to make this work-installation interactive, reacting to the sounds created by visitors.

With the success of his digital works at MUMAQ in 2021 and at MBAS in 2023, especially with three tapestries whose photos accompany this dossier:

#01: “MONTRÉAL VILLE IRISÉE”, woven with cotton threads and optical fibers animated by electronic microcontrollers that the artist programmed with the “Python” application, and assembled in 2021. #02: “PONT J-CARTIER”, woven with cotton threads and optical fibers animated by electronic microcontrollers that the artist programmed with the “Python” application, and assembled in 2020. (see this link: https: //www.paulettesauve.com/product/le-pont-en-or-the-bridge-in-gold/?lang=fr )

#03: “HIGHER VISION AU-DELA”, woven with cotton threads and optical fibers animated by electronic microcontrollers that the artist programmed with the “Python” application, and assembled in 2021. This triptych is in the MUMAQ’s permanent collection. (see this link: https: //www.paulettesauve.com/produit/vision-superieure-au-dela/?lang=fr )

#04: Photo of Paulette-Marie Sauvé at work on a TC2 Jacquard loom (see this link :

#05: Photo of the software created to weave with the TC2 Jacquard loom. This software interprets the digitized drawing created by Paulette, in binary code, in this case red and white, as presented on her laptop (see this link: https: //www.paulettesauve.com/produit/logiciel-du-metier-a-tisser-tc2-jacquard/?lang=fr ).
